Battling the Unbelief of Covetousness

Definition: Desiring something not for God's glory or in such a way that we lose our contentment in God.

Is Covetousness Idolatry?

Colossians 3:5

Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry.

Exodus 20:3 (First of Ten Commandments)

You shall have no other gods before Me.

Exodus 20:17 (Last of Ten Commandments)

You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife or his male servant or his female servant or his ox or his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor.

Hebrews 13:5 –6

Gracious Warnings about the Dangers of Desiring Money and Things

Abundance of Possessions Is Not Life

Luke 12:15

Then He said to them, "Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed; for not even when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions."

Desire for Riches Chokes the Word

Mark 4:19

The worries of the world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.

Loving Money Spans All Kinds of Sins

1 Timothy 6:10

For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

Desiring to be Rich Destroys the Soul

1 Timothy 6:9

But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction.

Money Is No Final Help in Death

1 Timothy 6:7

For we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it either.
